Southland’s a unique place to do business – where deals are still done on a handshake and integrity is crucial.
When Richard Murrell and Garry Tippett first teamed up at 21 North Road in 1993, their fledgling dealership boasted just 18 vehicles – it was old-fashioned hard work and a knack for innovation that enabled them to expand the operation while staying true to those traditional values.
In 2000, their business evolved into Southland Vehicle Sales, and moved to a larger site at 64 North Road. Three years later, further expansion saw the team open a second yard for commercial and SUVs and incorporate BP North Road, transforming a city block into the ultimate one-stop shop for motorists – they could buy it, fix it and fill it all on one site.
In 2004, SVS brought the Kia franchise to Southland in the belief the stylish, fuel efficient but affordable Korean-made cars would be a perfect fit for canny Southlanders.
They were right. By 2009 Kia made up 15 percent of Southland’s new vehicle market – at times even outselling Toyota, Ford and Holden.
If the Kia didn’t live up to expectations, it would only be a matter of days until word floated around the province. Ever noticed there are more Kia’s on the road than ever? Sort of says it all.
Richard and Garry’s emphasis on creating an enjoyable team environment has paid dividends in a loyal and dedicated staff, who all share their values and commitment to service.
That’s important because Southland is a unique place to do business where deals are still done with a handshake, integrity is crucial and family is king.
